System Requirements

First United Methodist Church of Hammonton, located in Hammonton, NJ, embarked on a significant sound system upgrade in 2023 to enhance speech clarity, support live music, and modernize audio control for their worship services. The existing system was outdated and could no longer meet the evolving needs of the congregation. JD Sound and Video, trusted for its deep expertise in church AV design and installation, was selected to deliver a complete solution tailored for the church’s acoustically challenging sanctuary.

System Design

JD Sound and Video designed and installed a comprehensive audio system that blends seamlessly into the traditional church environment while delivering powerful, intelligible sound throughout the space.

The heart of the system features four JBL CBT column loudspeakers—two mounted at the front of the sanctuary and two mid-room units set with delay to ensure even coverage from front to back. A single JBL powered subwoofer enhances low-end performance for music playback and special events.

Audio is mixed through a Behringer X32 digital mixing console, offering 40 input channels and full iPad control via a newly installed wireless router. This setup allows flexible control from anywhere in the sanctuary or rear booth.

Wireless communication is handled by five Shure BLX wireless microphone systems—one earset with a bodypack and four handheld vocal microphones—connected via an RF Venue DISTRO4 system that ensures clean RF signal and simplified cabling. Wired microphones, including a Shure SM57 and KSM137, provide instrument and piano pickup.

The system is powered by two Crown DSi amplifiers with built-in DSP for tuning and limiting, all securely housed in a 14-space Middle Atlantic rack with a Furman power sequencer for proper startup/shutdown.

Featured Equipment:

    • JBL CBT 70J-1 Column Speakers (x4): Exceptional clarity and wide coverage with minimal visual impact.
    • JBL IRX115BT Subwoofer (x1): Adds rich bass support for music and events.
    • Behringer X32 Console: Digital mixing with iPad control and flexible routing.
    • Shure Wireless Mics (BLX Series): One earset, four handhelds for vocalists.
    • RF Venue DISTRO4: Centralized antenna and power distribution.
    • Crown DSi Series Amplifiers (x2): High-performance amplification with integrated DSP.
    • Furman M-8S Sequencer: Clean, surge-protected, and sequential power-up/down.
    • Middle Atlantic Rack: Neatly houses all core components.

Result

The new sound system has significantly improved the audio experience at First United Methodist Church of Hammonton. Parishioners now enjoy consistent, clear sound from every seat in the sanctuary, enhancing the worship experience for both spoken word and musical performances. Volunteer and staff operators benefit from intuitive touchscreen and iPad control, simplifying system operation across services and events.
