Commercial Sound Masking System for Office Privacy and Workplace Comfort

JD Sound & Video recently completed a professional sound masking system design and installation for a commercial office environment that required improved speech privacy, better acoustic comfort, and more consistent background sound throughout both open office and private office areas.

In modern workplaces, unwanted conversation noise can quickly become distracting. Open office areas, shared workstations, conference-adjacent spaces, and private offices all have different acoustic needs. A properly designed commercial sound masking system helps reduce the intelligibility of nearby conversations by adding a controlled, unobtrusive background sound into the space. The result is a more comfortable work environment with improved privacy and fewer distractions.

Project Overview

For this project, JD Sound & Video expanded an existing AtlasIED sound masking system to serve two additional office zones. The system was designed to provide even sound masking coverage for both open office work areas and enclosed private offices.

The project included:

  • Two independent sound masking zones
  • Above-ceiling sound masking loudspeakers
  • Separate coverage for open office and closed office areas
  • Rack-mounted sound masking equipment
  • Amplification and level control
  • Plenum-rated speaker cabling
  • DSP programming and system tuning
  • Final commissioning using calibrated sound level measurements
  • Client training for system adjustment

The goal was not to make the space louder. The goal was to create a smooth, consistent background sound that helps conversations fade into the environment, improving speech privacy without becoming noticeable or distracting.

Why Sound Masking Matters in Commercial Offices

Office sound masking is especially useful in spaces where employees need privacy, focus, or reduced distraction. In banks, financial offices, healthcare offices, law firms, administrative spaces, and corporate environments, confidential conversations may happen throughout the day. Without acoustic support, speech can travel farther than expected, especially in spaces with hard surfaces, open ceilings, glass walls, or lightweight partitions.

A professionally installed sound masking system can help with:

  • Reducing speech distractions in open office areas
  • Improving privacy between private offices
  • Supporting confidential conversations
  • Creating a more consistent acoustic environment
  • Reducing the impact of nearby conversations
  • Helping employees stay focused
  • Improving comfort in busy workplace settings

Sound masking does not block sound completely, and it is not the same as soundproofing. Instead, it raises the background sound level in a controlled way, making speech less understandable at a distance. When designed and tuned correctly, the system blends naturally into the environment.

Designed for Open Offices and Private Offices

This project required separate treatment for two different types of office spaces.

The open office area needed broad, even coverage across workstations and shared spaces. Open offices can be challenging because conversations travel easily between desks, and employees often have little acoustic separation from one another.

The closed office areas required a different approach. Private offices can still allow speech to transfer through walls, doors, ceilings, and shared ceiling plenums. Adding properly placed above-grid sound masking loudspeakers helps improve privacy between offices and adjacent areas.

By separating the system into two zones, JD Sound & Video was able to provide better control over each area. This allows the sound masking level to be adjusted appropriately for the use of each space.

Above-Ceiling Sound Masking Loudspeakers

The system used above-grid sound masking loudspeakers installed in the ceiling space. This type of installation is common in commercial office environments because it keeps the system hidden while distributing sound evenly through the ceiling area.

Above-ceiling loudspeakers are designed specifically for sound masking applications. Unlike paging or music speakers, sound masking loudspeakers are not meant to project announcements or program audio. They are designed to create a consistent ambient sound that supports speech privacy and acoustic comfort.

Proper speaker placement is critical. If speakers are spaced poorly, the system may feel uneven, with some areas too loud and others too quiet. JD Sound & Video uses system layouts, wiring plans, and field commissioning to help ensure the masking system performs as intended.

Professional Rack Integration and DSP Programming

A commercial sound masking system is more than just speakers in the ceiling. The electronics behind the system are just as important.

For this project, JD Sound & Video integrated the new zones with the existing system equipment. The rack was built and wired to support the added loudspeaker zones, with amplifiers and controls configured for reliable operation. DSP programming was also updated so the system could properly manage the new sound masking areas.

Clean rack wiring, proper labeling, and organized installation practices are important on every commercial AV project. They make the system easier to service, easier to adjust, and more reliable over time.

Calibrated System Commissioning

After installation, JD Sound & Video commissioned the system using calibrated sound level measurements. This step is essential for a successful sound masking installation.

A sound masking system should not simply be turned on and left at a random level. The system needs to be measured, adjusted, and balanced so it provides consistent coverage throughout the space. If the masking level is too low, it will not provide the desired privacy benefits. If it is too high, it can become distracting.

Commissioning helps ensure the system is operating at the right level for the environment.

Training and Long-Term Usability

Once the system was installed and tuned, JD Sound & Video provided training on basic system adjustment. This gives the client a better understanding of how the system works and how level controls affect the space.

A good commercial sound masking system should be easy to live with. Most users should not notice it throughout the day, but they should notice the improvement in privacy and comfort.
