System Requirements

St. Rose of Lima Parish in Eddystone, PA reached out to JD Sound and Video to evaluate their existing church sound system and recommend a practical, scaled approach to improving clarity and consistency throughout the sanctuary. Like many churches with older audio equipment, their current setup relied on an outdated analog mixer with limited control, making it difficult to balance different speakers and maintain consistent volume from week to week.

The parish wanted a solution that would improve speech intelligibility, simplify operation for volunteers, and provide more professional control without needing a full system replacement. They also needed a new wireless microphone that could be used both in the sanctuary and in the parish hall below.

As a trusted commercial audio and video integrator serving churches across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, JD Sound and Video designed a cost-effective upgrade that maximized performance while keeping the existing loudspeakers and amplifier in place.

System Design

JD Sound and Video upgraded the core of the system by replacing the older analog mixer with a new digital mixing platform, allowing for better sound processing, improved EQ control, and more consistent results across multiple users.

The new digital mixer provides user-friendly presets, automixing functionality, and flexible control options that make it easy for church staff and volunteers to manage microphones during Mass, special services, and events. This upgrade allowed JD Sound and Video to properly balance and tune the system so that softer readers are heard clearly, while louder speakers remain controlled and comfortable.

To improve microphone performance throughout the sanctuary, JD Sound and Video supplied a new Shure SM86 vocal microphone for the cantor, delivering a more natural sound and stronger gain-before-feedback. New Shure MX Series microphones were also installed for both the pulpit and altar, providing clean, intelligible speech pickup for liturgy and spoken word.

The team also provided a new wireless microphone system that can be used in both the main sanctuary and the hall below, giving the parish flexibility for services, announcements, and community events.

To ensure the entire system operates reliably long-term, JD Sound and Video cleaned up and reorganized the equipment rack, improving cable routing, labeling, and overall system serviceability. Final commissioning included proper gain structure, level matching, and balancing so the system performs consistently week after week.

Featured Equipment:

    • Digital Audio Mixer Upgrade: Improved control, presets, EQ, and automixing

    • Shure SM86 Vocal Microphone: Cantor microphone for clear, natural vocal performance

    • Shure MX Series Microphones: Dedicated microphones for the pulpit and altar

    • Wireless Microphone System: Flexible use in the sanctuary or hall below

    • New Audio Wiring and System Cleanup: Improved reliability and performance

    • Rack Organization and Cable Labeling: Cleaner install and easier long-term service

    • System Balancing and Level Calibration: Clearer sound with consistent volume control

Result

With the new mixer, improved microphones, and upgraded wiring, St. Rose of Lima Parish now has a clearer, cleaner, and far more consistent church sound system—without needing to replace their existing speakers and amplifier.

Speech intelligibility is noticeably improved throughout the sanctuary, making softer readers easy to understand while keeping louder voices smooth and controlled. The system is also significantly easier to operate, thanks to digital presets and simplified control that reduces the stress on volunteers.

Most importantly, the parish now has a professional-grade sound system upgrade that delivers better results every week, backed by a team that understands church audio and how to tune a system properly—not just swap equipment.
