School Gymnasium Sound System Installation in Hamburg, NJ
JD Sound and Video designed and installed a new gymnasium performance sound system for the Hamburg School District in Hamburg, New Jersey. The goal of the project was to provide the school with a reliable, easy-to-use sound system that could support assemblies, performances, presentations, physical education activities, and school events.
The gymnasium is a classic school multi-purpose space with a stage, hard reflective surfaces, high ceilings, bleachers, and basketball use. These rooms can be challenging because the sound system needs to cover both the stage area and the gym floor clearly without creating excessive echo or feedback. JD Sound and Video designed a system that improved coverage, added performance-ready microphone options, and kept day-to-day operation simple for staff.
The main sound system included JBL CBT column loudspeakers mounted to the left and right of the stage. These slim column speakers were selected because they provide strong projection toward the back of the room while keeping a clean appearance near the stage. The design also avoided the need to fly large traditional cabinet loudspeakers from the ceiling structure. The original proposal notes that the JBL CBT loudspeakers were chosen for their slim design, better throw, and improved coverage compared with traditional loudspeakers.
To support music and performances, the system included two JBL subwoofers for low-frequency reinforcement. This helped make the system more full-range for school concerts, assemblies, dances, and other events where music playback needed more impact. Stage monitor loudspeakers were also installed so performers could hear themselves without the school needing to set up portable floor monitors, reducing setup time and removing a common trip hazard.
The system was built around a QSC TouchMix-16 digital mixer, allowing local control at the rack and wireless control from an iPad. This gave the school flexibility for different event types while still keeping the system manageable for staff. JD Sound and Video also integrated wireless microphones, wired microphone inputs at the front of the stage, Crown amplification, Furman power sequencing, and a locking Middle Atlantic equipment rack to keep the system organized and protected.
A later phase added choir microphone capability for stage performances. This included permanently installed Audix hanging microphones above the stage area, plus portable Audix MicroBoom choir microphones for flexible use with student groups. These microphones gave the school better pickup for choirs, stage performances, and group presentations without relying only on handheld microphones.
From design and rack fabrication to installation, wiring, testing, and training, JD Sound and Video handled the project in-house. The result was a practical, school-friendly gymnasium sound system that could support everyday use while also giving the school better tools for performances and special events.
